The long-takes add to this smooth sense of professionalism, as well as adding tension by feeling as if anything could happen, and you are right along with the task force members. The camera is always where it needs to be, always moving like a buttered-up snail that provides a measure of the calm, composed, professional nature of the task force members. This inexpensiveness is extremely well-covered up, winning several awards from the Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival (Best Short Film, Best Short Film Director, Best Cinematography, Best Effects, Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film). “Overlord” was made on a measly budget of $23,000, barely enough to buy a newline Toyota Prius. However, they soon discover an anomaly that they are not equipped to handle. Their objective is to retrieve data, clear the area, then pull out to let the heavy-duty task forces to take over. “Overlord” follows members of two Mobile Task Forces, investigating the disappearances of several people related to an esoteric cult based in a rural farmhouse. “SCP: Overlord” is one of a few fan-made films based on the ethos of the titular SCP Foundation: a horror-based, community-driven hub based on writing “SCPs”, objects deemed anomalous and dangerous to public consensus of normalcy. ” instead of “Bigfoot, a monstrous ape-like creature, towering over the humans at its feet as it reigned over the night.” Much of the horror elements in “SCP: Overlord” come from these cold descriptions, and your mind fills in the rest. As such, something like Bigfoot would be called “SCP-1000, a nocturnal, omnivorous ape, classified in the Hominini branch along with genera Pan and Homo. SCP: Overlord is currently streaming on YouTube. The core of the SCP franchise is built on the unknown: the films are created from the viewpoint of a cold, efficient NGO. But hopefully, that just means a sequel’s in the works. My only complaint (for lack of a better term) is that it ends on a definite cliffhanger. What I appreciate most about SCP: Overlord is that it really puts the emphasis on atmosphere and tension, from the operatives slowly winding their way through a fog-enshrouded forest, to encountering a site of the cult’s ceremonies, to getting their first glimpse of the cult’s normal-looking rural cabin headquarters… and the people floating high overhead.Ĭonsidering its minimal budget - the Kickstarter campaign raised a little over $23,000 - SCP: Overlord looks fantastic, with appropriately moody cinematography, solid production design, and some well-placed effects. Of course, the SCP is only called in when things get really bizarre, which means the SCP operatives soon find themselves facing unseen and malevolent forces. In SCP: Overlord, a Kickstarter-funded fan film written by Evan Muir and directed by Stephen Hancock, an elite SCP force investigates the compound of a cult suspected of criminal activities. All SCP stories are written in the style of scientific reports and internal documents, and some of them are quite chilling in their mundane language and clinical descriptions. Or… maybe the SCP Foundation is actually just an extremely popular and acclaimed online collaborative fiction project where people can submit stories of the bizarre and outlandish that make The X-Files pale in comparison. Its origins shrouded in mystery, its methods often venturing on brutal, extreme, and inhumane, the SCP Foundation is all that stands between humanity and oblivion. Which is where the SCP Foundation comes in. Standard government agencies simply don’t have the manpower, resources, or resolve to deal with these phenomena. Some even possess the power to bring about the end of the world as we know it. While some of these phenomena may be harmless and perhaps even whimsical, there are plenty that are far more ominous and dangerous. There exist, in this world, anomalies and phenomena that defy easy categorization, not to mention conventional attempts to capture, contain, and study them.
